Tian'anmen Square

Tian'anmen square(English name "Gate of Heavenly Peace") actually gets its name from the huge gate stands on the north of the square.  Tian'anmen square was built in 1417 and served as the entrance gate to the Imperial Palace named the Forbidden City.

天安门广场（英文名Gate of Heavenly Peace）是因位于广场北部的大门而得名的。天安门建于1417年，它是通向皇宫-"紫禁城"的大门。

In the past, every Chinese traditional home had a small courtyard in front of the main building. Of course, the courtyard of the loyal family had to be much larger. But the actual dimensions of the square have gone through a succession of changes over years. Tian'anmen does not only possess polital importance, but also is a place to relax for average citizens flying kites and walking and talking.

过去，每个传统中国家庭的正屋前面都有个小庭院。当然皇家的庭院更大，然而广场的实际面积已经随时光的变迁变更过很多次了。天安门广场不仅在政治上具有非常重要的地位，也是平民百姓放风筝、散步、聊天的的休闲场所。

Once Chuang Chou(Zhuangzi) dreamed he was a butterfly. He did not know that he had ever been anything but a butterfly and was content to hover from flower to flower. Suddenly he woke and found to his astonishment that he was Chuang Chou. But it was hard to be sure whether he really was Chou and had only dreamt that he was a butterfly, or was really a butterfly, and was only dreaming he was Chou.

As American people's concept of being polite is different from that held here, I'd like to discuss with you the use of "please", "excuse me" and "thank you". I have noticed that the Chinese people use "please" as often as we do on most occasions. But on some occasions they don't use this word. For instance, Chinese teachers rarely say "please sit down" when their students have answered their questions and the traffic police here are also not accustomed to use "please" when they are on duty.
