In 221 B.C, much of what came to constitude China Proper was unified for the first time. In subjugating the six other major states of Eastern Zhou, the Qin kings had relied heavily on legalist scholar advisors.

The First Imperial period--Qin Dynasty

Centralization, achieved by ruthless methods, was focused on standardizing legal codes and bureaucratic procedures, the forms of writing and coinage, and the patterns of thought and scholarship. To silence criticism of imperial rules, the kings banished or put to death many dissenting Confucian sholars and confiscated and burned their books. To fend off barbarian intrusion, the fortification walls built by the various warring states were connected to make a 5000-kilometer-long great wall.

Shang Dynasty
Shang dynasty endured roughly from 1700 to 1027 B.C. The Shang Dynasty(also called Yin dynasty in its late stages) is believed to have been founded by a rebel leader who overthrew the last Xia ruler. Its civilization was based on agriculture, argmented by hunting and animal husbandry.  Two important events of the period were the development of a writing system, as revealed in archaic Chinese inscriptions found on the tortoise shells and flat cattle bones, and the use of bronze metallurgy. A number of ceremonial bronze vessels with inscriptions date from the Shang period. The workmanship on the bronzes attests to a high level of civilization.


商朝



　　商朝大约历经了大约从公元前1700年到公元前1027年这一段时期。人们认为商朝 (王朝的晚期被称为"殷" )是由推翻夏朝最后一个统制者的起义领袖建立的。商代的文明是建立在农业生产、狩猎和畜牧业发展的基础之上。
　　　这一时期，有两个重大的事件。一是文字的出现，发现了刻在龟壳和扁平的牛骨上的篆刻文字；另外就是青铜器的冶炼技术的应用。一批有篆刻图案和文字的用于祭祀仪式的青铜器可以追溯到商朝。从青铜器的工艺水平反映了的极高的文明程度。

Revolts broke out as soon as the first Qin emperor died in 210 B.C,  The Imperial system initiated during the Qin dynasty, however, set a pattern that was developed over the next two millennia.

Han



Another new dynasty, called Han(206 B.C -- A.D.220), emerged with its capital at Chang'an. The new empire retained much of the Qin administrative structure but retrieved a bit from centralized rule. Confucian ideals of government, were adoped as the creed of the Han empire.

Han

Intellectual, literary and artistic endeavors revived and flourished. The Han period produced the China's most famous historian, Sima Qian, whose Shiji(historical records) provides detailed chronicle from the time of a legendary Xia emperor to that of the Han emperor Wudi. Technological advances also marked this period.

Han

After 200 years, Han rule was interrupted briefly(In A.D 9-24 by Wang Meng, a reformer), and then restored for another 200 years. In A.D220, the Han empire collapsed.


沿续了200年后，汉朝的统制曾经短暂地终止了（公元9-24年，名叫王莽夺位），尔后重新光复又延续了200年的时间。到公元220年，汉朝灭亡。
