Is there a way to disable the backspace key shortcut? Report abuse

I love Google Chrome but for one irritating quirk: when you press backspace, the browser automatically returns to the previous page. I tend to accidentally press backspace when my text field or game isn't "selected," which either results in loss of posts or disconnection from the game. It happens so much I have to use a different browser for peace of mind!

I don't have an answer except that it pisses me off too. Firefox seems to be the only browser with a straight forward method.

Hah... that happens to me from time to time, too. It's incredibly annoying when you type-up a big post, and find yourself accidentally navigated to the previous page.
I use ctrl+a, ctrl+c, and ctrl+v religiously.

to disable or replace any key with another get sharpkeys http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/ i use it to replace the caps lock with a second shift key
it will work better for you if you don't try to select the key from the drop downs. simply press the key you want changed then press the key you want it changed to. i use it in vista home and have had zero problems with it.

As far as I'm concerned, having backspace without a modifier be a shortcut for an action with no undo is a bug that the devs should fix.

In Opera both backspace and Z are shortcuts for back and X is a shortcut for forward, and it never bothered me (I actually use the Z and X quite often). In Opera, though, if I type something in an edit box and accidentally go back, I can go forward again and have the text still be there. In Chrome, going back and then forward wipes out what you've entered. I can see how it may become a problem here. I think fixing the way edit boxes react to back and forward would be a better solution than making the back/forward navigation harder.

It seems like everyone above has had their request granted because my chrome browser has recently stoped going back when i press backspace.
I actually really like the feature where you can just press the backspace key and go back a page. To the point where I will probably be going back to firefox instead of using chrome without the ability to use a shortcut key to go back a page.
If anyone knows of any other shortcut key (aka hotkey) which can be used to go back one page in chrome then please let me know.
In firefox you can set it in about:config but chrome doesn't seem to have this functionality (hopefully the will add it).

What version and OS are you on? For me (version 4.1.249.1042 on Win XP) backspace is still Back.

I would like the back shortcut if there were a corresponding shortcut for forward. Opera uses X and Z for forward and back, respectively, and I used that a lot when Opera was my primary browser. I've never found much use for a Back shortcut by itself without a corresponding Forward, though, so I don't tend to use the backspace key that way. I'm just trying to get used to not having that type of navigation available since moving to Chrome.

This works:

(It says it's for dev version, but for me it works on regular version.)
