Who Should Be Treated
AASLD Practice Guidelines
Two of the nation's leading liver specialists, Anna Lok, M.D., and Brian
McMahon, M.D., developed practice guidelines for chronic hepatitis B that were
first approved by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
(AASLD) in 2001, and published in Hepatology, a medical journal for liver
diseases.
In light of new advances in the field, these guidelines were updated in the
fall of 2003, spring 2004, fall of October 2007 and fall of 2009.
Drs. Lok and McMahon provide an excellent review of the current state of
knowledge in hepatitis B. Their conclusion answers the important treatment
questions as to who should be treated and with what therapies based on all the
available evidence.
