If you have been given single dose vials of Interferon

1，Wash hands thoroughly.

2, Put a clean piece of kitchen roll onto a clean tray on the work surface and put all your other equipment onto the tray as follows;

3.Open packet with syringe and drop the syringe onto the tray. Open green needle and orange needle in the same way. Place a couple of pieces of cotton wool onto the tray. Take out your Interferon vial from your Fridge and put this onto the tray.

4.Wash hands thoroughly.

5.Put the green needle onto the end of the syringe. twisting it slightly as you push it on, to give a tight seal. This is just to draw up the solution and will be changed for the smaller orange one later. Place the syringe and needle back onto the tray.

6.Flip off the top of the Interferon vial. This is usually easy to do with your thrumb.

7.Remove the plastic cover from the needle on the syringe.

Aim for the centre circle in the rubber bung of the Interferon and push the needle through
8.Tip the Interferon vial upside down and make sure the needle tip is below the liquid level .This prevents any air being drawn into the syringe

9Draw up the exact amount of Interferon you need For some people this may be the whole amount For others it may be slightly less so please make sure of how much you need in the syringe. 10.You then remove the green needle and syringe from the vial and. Keeping the needle pointing upwards. check there is no air in the syringe(i.e. a gap between the fluid level and where the needle fits onto the syringe),If there is. gently push the plunger to expel this air. It will come out through the eye of the needle. You should not be squirling the liquid into the air through. so stop as soon as you see the liquid level reach the end of the syringe.

11. check the amount in your syringe. Have you got the right amount of interferon?if so , then romove the green needle by twisting it from the syringe .Drop the needle into your Sharps Box. If not you will need to put the needle and syringe back into the Interferon vial and draw up the right amount.

12 Twist on the orange needle and loosen the plastic cover. This is the smaller needle used for the injection. Place the syringe onto your tray.

13. Sit comfortably on the chair to prepare the area for injection. You should use your upper. outer thigh area or your abdomen (stomach).Don't use your other arm or anywhere else. Get advice from your Nurse or Doctor if you are very thin and don't have much flesh on your legs or stomach area.

If you have been given multi-dose of Interferon.

The procedure is exactly the same as for the sigle dose vials. however there is a 5 point checklist to remember.

1 The vial is for your use only.

2. Once the plastic top has been removed from the Interferon vial. always use an alcohol swab to clean the top of the rubber bung.

3. make sure you draw up the exact amount of Interferon you need. Please make sure you know the exact amount. It may be worthwhile labelling a spare syringe at the level you need to remind you. Your doctor or nurse may be able to help with this.

4. After drawing up the first dose make sure you remember to date the vial in the space provided.

1. If you are right handed hold the syringe like a dart in your right hand or in your left hand if you are left handed. Use your other hand to pinch up your skin on your upper, outer thigh or abdomen. Check this area is not sore. bruised or broken and preferable quite :fleshy.:

2 At about an angle of 45. gently push the needle into your skin until it reaches up to the orange plastic (you should not have any of the needle visible)Gently push the plunger down to inject the interferon.

3 When all the liquid has left the syringe pull the needle and syringe out again without altering the angle. so it will not hurt you. Drop into your sharps Box.

4 Press gently over the injected area with clean cotton wool. don't worry if you see slight leakage. It should not bleed a lot. If it does bleed. Keep pressing for a little while. You may need to put an elastoplast on. Check site later for any sign of soreness and tell your Nurse or Doctor at the next opportunity.

some side-effect to note

Please remember not everyone gets these effects. some of the problems listed may be due to other medication you may be taking and are not always due to Interferon. Try to remember the positive side of things too and that sometimes the problems can be overcome.

1. The most common problem that people experience when having Interferon is a fever developing after the injection. Usually after a few hours they notice sweatiing and a generally awful feeling. like having flu. To prevent this happening at all is obviously the best plan. If can be helped by taking Paracetamol tablets 30 minutes before an injection. and by having the injection late at night to sleep through the worst effects. This is sometimes not possible though, as some treatment plans may stipulate the timing of the Interferon injection. Please discuss with your Doctor or Nurse to see if you can choose the time of your injection and what dose of Paracetamol to take.
