Researchers, led by Dr. Claus Hellerbrand, at the University of Regensburg, Germany, prospectively studied 30 patients infected with hepatitis C to see whether their toothbrushes became contaminated with hepatitis C RNA. The investigators also collected saliva samples from infected patients both before and after they brushed their teeth. Dr. Hellerbrand announced that 30% of the infected patients tested positive for HCV RNA in their saliva before brushing their teeth, while 38% tested positive after brushing. HCV RNA was detected in 40% of rinsings from the used toothbrushes. The patients with contaminated toothbrushes were not significantly different in their oral hygiene or disease severity than patients whose rinse water was negative, Dr. Hellerbrand said. The German researcher commented that it is unknown whether these HCV RNA meant that the virus could be transmitted via toothbrushes, but that it was not impossible. "We can't prove [the virus] is alive and could infect another, and we can't exclude that," he noted. "It's probably not easy to be transmitted in this way."
