Hepatitis B from Rich Lifestyle

Doctors are warning wealthy Chinese people to be aware of the growing incidence of hepatitis, as nearly one in every 10 Chinese carries the hepatitis B virus.

The high incidence of hepatitis is due to an increase in intake of alcohol and animal fat, which has made hepatitis a so-called "rich man's disease," according to professor Fan Jiangao, who works at a hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

"Wealth is not to blame here, but the lack of knowledge about a healthy life," Dr Yang Binghui said during a public lecture about liver disease.

“这里,富有不是被责怪的对象,但缺乏富有生活的知识是。”在一个肝病公共教学会议上,杨丙惠医生说道。

China's Ministry of Health said in February that it plans to launch a nationwide survey on the current hepatitis B situation in China, as controlling the virus is one of the ministry's top priorities.

It is estimated that China has some 120 million hepatitis B virus carriers, more than half of the world's total.

According to a study by the Shanghai Academy of Contagious Diseases, the average medical expense for a chronic hepatitis B patient is 20,477 yuan (US$2,560) a year.

The country's total spending on treatment of the disease is estimated at 900 billion yuan annually.

J Ron:
As amusing as you think, the comparison is made in *their* society not
America. Lifestyle and standard of living is totally different in China
as compared to America. Only rich people in China can afford to maintain
themselves with Hep B. Many common people do not have the resources to
keep themselves alive with Hep B. They are constantly working for
survival which results in fatigue. They are constantly eating food with
preservatives because they cannot afford fresh food. They do not have
the money to get the vaccines they need. They cannot afford to see
doctors and have access to medications that they need. That is why Hep B
carriers are called the rich man's disease.

I have lived in Asia for the past 11 yrs and work with an Asian institution
the past 18 yrs so I am not clueless on the society.

The govt is  calling it  a 'rich mans' disease for a very different reason
than you allude to. It is the same reason why they banned playing golf
during the late 80's and early 90's. They have to somehow still tell the
people that attaining wealth is not a good thing and enjoying the luxuries
of life is a bad thing. That is what the article is about. It is linking a
very serious issue in China, HepB, with a political agenda.

In a sense it is a 'rich mans' disease since alot of money that is supposed
to be allocated to vaccinating the rural areas goes into the pockets of the
local leaders. I can post many stories of fake HepB vaccinees being used or
overcharging the govt

That's a wrong and serious social problem, the government has not studied the truth, but believe such nonsense and take it as an excuse to escape from the responsibility.Even treat us as second class people, thus we cannot share the equality on learning, work, marriage etc.
