   However mean your life is,meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will faults even in paradise.Love your life,poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling , glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring .i do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace . The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.Maybe they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it oftener happens that they are not above being supporting themselves by dishonest means,which should be more  disreputable . Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things,whether clothes or friends . Turn the old ,return to them . Things do not change; We change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

  不管你的生活有多卑微，面对它吧，把生活进行下去；不可逃脱，也不能报以恶言。生活还不及你坏哩。你最富的时候，它反而最贫瘠。人若爱找茬儿，天堂也能被他挑出毛病。哪怕贫穷，你也要热爱生活。快活、激动和光荣的时光甚至在济贫院里也享受得到。反射在那里窗上的落日的光芒，和照在有钱人家窗上的阳光是一样的亮堂，门前的积雪也同样都是在早春融化。在我的眼里，一个心态平和的人，他思想乐观，处世泰然，居住在济贫院里就像居住在皇宫里一样。在我看来，镇上的穷人们往往过着最独立的自在的生活。他们一定足够伟大，不然岂能欣然接受。大多数人以为自己不依靠城镇养活，认为自己超凡脱俗，但情况往往更是，他们利用不正当的手段作为谋生之计，这些让他们更加名声狼籍。像圣人那样，对待贫穷就像对待园子里的草木，耕耘它吧！不要自找麻烦地去寻求新事物，新朋友或者新衣服。去找旧的，回归旧有之物。万物并没有改变，变的是我们。衣帽可以卖掉，但思想应该保留。
