| "The Da Vinci Code" led the foreign box office for a third weekend, as its total raced to $410 million -- more than double its North American haul of $172.7 million. Sony forecast the film version of Dan Brown's best-selling novel will "in the next couple of days" surpass 2002's "Spider-Man" (overseas gross of $417.9 million) and 2004's "Spider-Man 2" ($410.5 million) to become the studio's biggest international hit ever. "Da Vinci" earned $52 million over the weekend. It was No. 1 in Japan, Italy, Germany, Spain and six other European markets, as well as Argentina and New Zealand.
Coming in a distant second was "X-Men: The Last Stand," which earned $33.5 million. The international total to date stands at $134.5 million, about $40 million less than its current domestic total. "Poseidon" netted an estimated $22.9 million, taking its international total to $34.1 million. The biggest new "Poseidon" markets were South Korea (No. 1, $6.2 million), Japan (No. 3, $2.7 million) and the U.K. (No. 3, $2.4 million). "Over the Hedge" had limited overseas exposure, grossing an estimated $6.7 million from nine territories, of which six were new. The title, which has grossed $112.4 million in three weeks of U.S. playtime, bowed to an estimated $4 million in Russia. The overseas total stands at $8.6 million. "Mission: Impossible III" grossed an estimated $6.6 million; its international box office total now stands at $193.9 million -- about $71 million more than the picture has grossed so far in the U.S. -- with Japan, China and India playdates still ahead. |
