林间野花： Harbinger of Spring (Erigenia bulbosa)

Harbinger of Spring is also known as Pepper-and-Salt.

Plant Type: This is a herbaceous plant, it is a perennial. From a corm, not a bulb as the name suggests.

Leaves: The leaves are alternate. Each leaf is divided, usually into three major divisions with each division further divided and the final leaflets being somewhat irregularly lobed. The leaves are small at the time of flowering and increase greatly.
Flowers: The flowers have 5 Regular Parts and are up to 0.6cm wide (0.25 inches). They are white with red-brown anthers. Blooms first appear in mid winter and continue into mid spring.

Fruit: A flat disk.

Habitat: Rich woods.

Range: Most of eastern US except extreme north and south.

One of the first native plants to bloom. The 'Pepper-and-Salt' name comes from the appearance of the dark anthers against the white petals.
