A doctor whose career has been spent saving lives has received a liver to save his.

Dr. Michael Harris underwent a six-hour liver transplant surgery Wednesday at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in Manhattan after an urgent appeal to find a donor.

"Thank God. He's still in the ICU, but he's doing well," Harris' wife, Frieda, told the Daily News last night. "We've just been on an emotional roller coaster. It's been very traumatic."

She said the liver came from a New Yorker who died suddenly.

Michael Harris was facing certain death as his organ, ravaged after he contracted hepatitis C following an accident at work nearly 20 years ago, failed him.

The cancer specialist and director of the famed Tomorrow's Children's Institute for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Hackensack, N.J., appealed to The News for help in finding a donor in May.

"I don't want something bad to happen to somebody else," the 61-year-old father of four said then. "If it does, and their family is willing to donate their liver, I hope that I would make them proud and live on to help other people."
