Main research items are the pathogenesis of mucosal inflammation throughout the gastrointestinal tract, development of new drugs for inflammatory bowel diseases, purification of hepatitis viruses, establishment of human liver cell lines, and molecular diagnosis in pancreatic and biliary cancers. PROFESSOR Dr. Chung-Yong Kim has performed the molecular epidemiological and biological studies of hepatitis viruses and chronic liver diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma in recent years. His ongoing researches are the identification of hepatitis C virus (HCV)- specific antigens and the purification of HCV particles using these antigens. Dr. In-Sung Song's research focuses on the pathogenic mechanism of gastroduodenal diseases caused by Helicobacter pylori and on the development of new drugs for treating inflammatory bowel diseases. Dr. Yong-Bum Yoon's main research subject is on the pathogenic mechanism of gallstone. He is also trying to re-evaluate and assess the clinical parameters in the diagnosis of pancreatitis. Molecular diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is also one of his research agendas. Dr. Hyo-Suk Lee's research fields include culture of human liver cells and establishment of in vitro culture system for hepatitis C virus. He is also interested in the clinical characteristics, biological behavior and pathogenetic mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma. Dr. Hyun-Chae Jung's main research focus is exploring the pathogenesis of mucosal inflammation of GI tract. He has performed the studies on cytokine gene expression in Helicobacter pylori infected gastric epithelial cell line model, colon epithelial cell line model. Dr. Yong-Tae Kim is researching to develop new methods to be used in the accurate diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and cystic tumors of pancreas. He also is involved in the researches of genetic alterations and signal transduction pathways in pancreatic and biliary cancers. Dr. Jung-Hwan Yoon has researched on the establishment and induction of liver specific differentiation of human liver cell lines. Currently, he is studying the molecular biological mechanisms of hepatitis and hepatocarcinogenesis. The pathogenesis of gastrointestinal mucosal inflammation is Dr. Joo-Sung Kim's reseach item that has focused on host-parasite interaction and a role of inflammatory cells in perpetuation of the mucosal inflammation in Helicobacter pylori infection. Dr. Dong-Ho Lee's major interest is small intestinal brush border enzyme, the mechanism of antibiotics resistance in Helicobacter pylori, and the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer form H. pylori associated gastritis. Dr. Kook-Lae Lee is interested in the regulation of small intestinal lactase activity and has investigated the effect of thyroid hormone on the regulation of rat intestinal lactase activity and its genetic mechanism.
