GANGS BATTLING TO OSCAR VICTORY?
'Gangs of New York' premiered in Hollywood tonight, as specualtion mounts about the historical epic as an Oscar contender in the acting, directing and screenplay categories.
It's first test will be on Thursday when the Golden Globe nominations are announced in Los Angeles.
Legendary director Martin Scorsese ( 'Taxi Driver,' 'Raging Bull') directed this often violent film, and has won overwhelming praise from his star-studded cast including Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz.
The epic is set in Lower Manhattan in the 19th century at a time of major political and social unrest.
Leonardo Di Caprio's character of Amsterdam Vallon leads the revolt as he seeks revenge for his father's death and tries to find his place as an Irish immigrant in the Land of the Free. The movie recognizes that America was born out of violence, says Scorsese.
The American Civil War is in full swing, and the country is on the verge of collapse. Yet the riots of New York remain a largely untold chapter of history. Until now. It's not a pleasant picture but many think, as the film awards season gears up, it will be recognised as a very good one. |
