Prognosis factors of young patients undergoing curative resection for hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter study

In view of the controversies concerning the prognosis of young and older patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), researchers sought to compare young (age ≤ 40 years) vs older patients (aged > 40 years) with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC in terms of their clinicopathological features and prognosis after curative resection. Among 4,504 included patients with HBV-related HCC who underwent curative resection, the young group comprised 699 patients and older group comprised 3,805 patients. Young patients vs older patients exhibited better liver function, more aggressive tumor characteristics, and worse prognosis. Poor OS and RFS were observed in young patients in correlation with a tumor size of ≥ 5 cm and macrovascular invasion. If more frequent surveillance could detect the tumors at the early stage, long-term survival can be expected in the young patients.
