Research on cirrhosis with liver coma brings hope for patients
Ludhiana, November 25
A collaborative study, which was conducted by Prof Sandeep Singh Sidhu, Department of Gastroenterology, Dayanand Medical College (DMC), Ludhiana, and Prof BC Sharma, Department of GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi, over the past three years, has yielded a breakthrough in treatment of patients with cirrhosis with liver coma.
Prof Sidhu presented his research paper on “L — Ornithine L — Aspartate in the treatment of cirrhosis patients suffering from bouts of liver coma” at the annual meeting of the American Association For Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), held at Washington DC (USA), from October 20 to 24. His research has also been published in Hepatology Journal of the AASLD.
Earlier, his research paper was awarded Best of Asia Plenary Digestive Week at the Plenary Paper for Presentation, held at Hong Kong on September 25 this year.
Their research has also been accepted by Cochrane Society, London (United Kingdom), for publication. It will now be presented in Hyderabad on December 9 as one the best of research papers of AASLD/ European Association for the Study of Liver (EASL) of the year 2017.
Commenting on his research paper, Dr Sidhu said, “The use of L – Ornithine L – Aspartate (LOLA) offers a ray of hope for patients with cirrhosis suffering from liver coma. Along with the conventional treatment, intravenous infusion of LOLA given over four days, decreases the blood ammonia level, speeds up the recovery of liver coma, shortens the length of hospital stay and is completely safe.”
He said, “Punjab has a huge burden of patients with liver cirrhosis due to alcohol consumption and Hepatitis C.”
Dr Sidhu completed his DM in gastroenterology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1993.
