The natural history of hepatitis B carriers was studied in this thesis abstract by Knop et al who prospectively followed 163 patients over 2 years in this European population. They found that if someone was a carrier with less than 2000 IU/ml of HBV DNA, over the follow-up time points in this study the had a 4% chance of clearing HBsAg and 29% chance of becoming HBV DNA undetectable.  Whereas is HBV DNA was >2000 IU/ml only 4.4% became HBV DNA undetectable and HBsAg loss was zero.
