Relaxing rules around health screening for international students will be a tricky juggling act.
From July, foreign students will only have to be screened for tuberculosis, unless they have other health conditions, and they won't have to supply full medicals.
New Zealand Medical Association chairman Paul Ockelford says there can be unrecognised infections, especially those which could be sexually transmitted like HIV, and hepatitis B and C.
He says it's obviously a balance between economic benefits, streamlining process and the possible risks to the community.
Mr Ockelford says often disorders such as haemophilia are only detected once the person is in New Zealand as the condition isn't tested or treated in some countries.
