yes, you are right. it is only a joke. It is a kind of criminal activity to do that. We all have hbv, right? so how about buy 100M insurance on a guy you know is not good on health and bet him die of liver disease(or cancer) within 3 years?
it is also a gamble. Insurance company sometimes are greed to the premium so they allow it. Gamble is legal in canada, so it will bring a even huge underground casino to gamble a people's live, let's say 100K million.
anyway, joke is a joke, don't take it too seriously.

In theory, it could work - you have to have deep pocket and patience. Frankly, it is not easy to predict who will drop dead within a fixed period of time.

An Australian insurance company, IAG, has just moved to expand into China. I hope they know what you know. Many Mums and Dads are shareholders in this company.

But please don't worry about it too much. It is a joke and rarely happen. In fact, right now, the chinese government has the law only blood-related parents and couples can be the beneficial, since too many fake father/wife involved.
Insurance company isn't stupid either. They can send some people to protect the insurancer when the money is high enough in the gamble.
