WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2011In Memoriam: Emmet B. Keeffe, MD
The news of the death of Emmet B. Keeffe, MD on August 8, 2011 shocked and saddened all who knew him. Dr. Keeffe was a kind and generous contributor to the Hepatitis C Support Project and hepatitis C community. He was one of the first experts to contribute to HCV Advocate’s Medical Writers’ Circle and has been a long-time friend to theProject.
Dr. Keeffe was Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Stanford University in Hepatology and recently was appointed Principal Medical Fellow at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. His accomplishments are too many to number, so here are a few: Chief of Hepatology and Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at Stanford, active in many professional organizations, including President of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the 2004-2005 President of the American Gastroenterological Association. He was member of the Board of Directors of the American Liver Foundation (1991-1995) and Board of Directors of the Northern California and Nevada Division of the American Liver Foundation. Dr. Keeffe’s research interests included general and transplant hepatology. He authored more than 700 articles, book chapters and miscellaneous publications; his editorial contributions are equally as impressive.
We extend our condolences to Dr. Keeffe’s family, friends, colleagues, and patients. His death leaves a huge hole in our community.
