In a recent research, Hong Kong researchers claimed to have found a special type of gene, Cell Cycle-Related Kinase (CCRK), which was linked to male sex hormones and was the main reason behind the expansion of liver cancer. The Journal of Clinical Investigation made the research public.
The research also claimed that as compared to women, due to this gene, 10% of the men in China, increased their chances of developing the liver cancer by three to seven times and till date the deadly cancer had already caused 700,000 deaths.
Alfred Cheng, Research Associate Professor at the university's Institute of Digestive Disease added, "This gene is normally asleep, but we found that androgen receptors come by and nudge it awake. Once awake, the CCRK gene induces growth of liver cells“.
Cheng further stated that supplementary detailed studied are needed so that the gene purpose and ways to disable it could be verified and these studies would also help low expression rate so that the gene could not perform its procedure, then the CCRK gene could control the liver cancer. Investigators also expected that the finding might offer therapy ideas.
