Hep B Treatment Guidelines Too Restrictive?

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology(Jan. 2011), the current HBV treatment guidelines exclude many people who go on to develop liver cancer or die of cirrhosis. These findings have important implications for the development of different types of treatment to better meet the needs of individuals who are still at high risk for end-stage liver disease. The authors also point out that including additional indicators in the treatment guidelines would make more high-risk people eligible for current treatment. Read more.

The Hepatitis B Foundation partnered with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and the Asian Pacific American Medical School Association (APAMSA) to educate medical students around the country about hepatitis B. Translated Podcasts Online from Seattle Patient Workshop

The Hepatitis B Foundation presented the final B Informed Now! Patient Workshop on December 6 in Seattle, WA in partnership with the Within Reach’s Hepatitis B Coalition of WA. Expert speakers provided current information about the care and management of chronic hepatitis B and the importance of liver cancer screening and treatment. The keynote presentation and PowerPoint slides are now available as Podcasts on our website in four different languages – English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Korean – by Chia Wang, MD., Clinical Assistant Professor, U. of Washington, and physician at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. San Francisco Hep B Free Confirmed as Model Program

The Cancer Prevention Institute of California and three other institutions have released new research findings that demonstrate the citywide collaborative effort known as the San Francisco Hep B Free campaign has increased awareness, testing and vaccination for chronic hepatitis B – a silent killer and the leading cause of liver cancer – in the city's Asian and Pacific Islander community, which is at highest risk for this serious liver infection.
