PHYSICAL examination services at a hospital in south China's Guangzhou were suspended by health authorities after a whistleblower revealed it tested for hepatitis B in pre-employment physicals, a practice banned to protect the rights of virus carriers.
The Public Health Bureau in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, halted the services at the Hospital of Guangdong No. 1 Power Bureau for one month, ordered it to improve its internal management and announced the penalty to all Guangzhou hospitals, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
The hospital became the country's first to receive punishment after the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health jointly issued a joint notice forbidding hospitals to do the test in pre-employment medical check-ups in February 2010.
A hepatitis B carrier cannot spread the disease by everyday contact. The virus can only be transmitted through sex or the transfer of blood.
However, discrimination against HBV carriers is still common in China.
Banning hospitals from conducting the test in pre-employment check ups aims to give a fair chance of employment to HBV carriers.
