Neural Stem Cells
Neural stem cells build the entire nervous system of a developing animal. Some neural stem cells remain active in adult mammals, and much current research effort is aimed at harnessing them for therapies of nervous system injury and neurodegenerative diseases. The poster shows the current state of this field. Scientists have developed procedures to derive several types of neurons and glia from fetal and adult neural stem cells as well as from embryonic and adult-derived induced pluripotent stem cell lines. The functional transplantation of neural stem cells into the diseased nervous system, however, continues to pose challenges. The Poster is freely available thanks to support from STEMCELL Technologies.
