Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky has served as a Director of the Company since June 2002. Ambassador Barshefsky, former United States Trade Representative, is Senior International Partner at the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, Washington, D.C., where she provides global business, investment, regulatory and negotiation advice to clients in markets worldwide. In her position as the United States Trade Representative from 1997 to 2001, Ambassador Barshefsky served as a member of the Cabinet of former President Clinton, as President Clinton's principal trade policy advisor and as chief trade negotiator for the United States. Under her leadership, hundreds of trade agreements were negotiated, including the market opening agreement which paved the way for entry of the People's Republic of China into the World Trade Organization. Prior to serving as Deputy United States Trade Representative from 1993 to 1996, Ambassador Barshefsky was a partner and co-chair of the International Practice Group at the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 and the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University in Washington D.C. in 1975. Following Ambassador Barshefsky's tenure as United States Trade Representative, she was appointed as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to her service on the Board of Directors of Idenix, Ambassador Barshefsky is a Director of the American Express Company, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., and is a member of Intel Corporation's Policy Advisory Board.
