Definition of treatment response
- For HBeAg positive patients:
Normalisation of s. ALT and achievement of HBe
seroconversion (i.e. HBeAg negative and anti-HBe
antibody positive), s. HBV DNA (whenever available)
negative.
- For HBeAg negative patients:
Long term aviraemia (i.e. HBV DNA negative, as
measured by non-PCR technique)
Generally, patients’ rates of response to interferonalpha
and lamivudine are similar, all of which increase
with the level of elevation of s. ALT. The average
response rates with interferon-alpha treatment for 6

months and lamivudine treatment for 1 year in the
Asian population are 17%, and 16%,respectively. A delayed response rate of 40.6% with 6
months of thymosin alpha-1 treatment was reported in a
Taiwanese study.
