太湖之梦

First Advent of Love

O fair is Love’s first hope to gentle mind!

As Eve’s first star thro’ fleecy cloudlet peeping;

And sweeter than the gentle south-west wind,

O’er willowy meads and shadow’d waters creeping,

And Ceres’ golden fields;-the sultry hind

Meets it with brow uplift, and stays his reaping.

She Is Not Fair to Outward View

She is not fair to outward view

As many maidens be;

Her loveliness I never knew

Until she smiled on me.

O then I saw her eye was bright,

A well of love, a spring of light.

But now her looks are coy and cold,

To mine they ne’er reply,

And yet I creased not to behold

The love-light in her eye:

Her very frowns are fairer far

Than smiles of other maidens are.
