Introduction of Lord Francis Bacon

Lord Francis Bacon,(1561-1626) the father of experimental philosophy, whose father had been Lord Keeper, and himself was a great many years Lord Chancellor under King James I. Nevertheless, amidst the intrigues of a Court, and the affairs of his exalted employment (Because of bribery and extortion he was sentenced by the House of Lords to pay a fine of about four hundred thousand French livres, to lose his peerage and his dignity of Chancellor.), which alone were enough to engross his whole time, he yet found so much leisure for study as to make himself a great philosopher, a good historian, and an elegant writer; and a still more surprising circumstance is that he lived in an age in which the art of writing justly and elegantly was little known, much less true philosophy. Lord Bacon, as is the fate of man, was more esteemed after his death than inlifetime. His enemies were in the British Court, and his admirers were foreigners.

of revenge

REVENGE is a kind of wild justice; which the more man' s nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out. For as for the first wrong, it doth but offend the law; but the revenge of that wrong, putteth the law out of office. Certainly, in taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing it over, he is superior; for it is a prince's part to pardon.

And Solomon, I am sure, saith, It is the glory of a man, to pass by an offence. That which is past is gone, and irrevocable; and wise men have enough to do, with things present and to come; therefore they do but trifle with themselves, that labor in past matters. There is no man doth a wrong, for the wrong's sake; but thereby to purchase himself profit, or pleasure, or honor, or the like. Therefore why should I be angry with a man, for loving himself better than me? And if any man should do wrong, merely out of ill-nature, why, yet it is but like the thorn or briar, which prick and scratch, because they can do no other. The most tolerable sort of revenge, is for those wrongs which there is no law to remedy; but then let a man take heed, the revenge be such as there is no law to punish; else a man's enemy is still before hand, and it is two for one. Some, when they take revenge, are desirous, the party should know, whence it cometh. This is the more generous. For the delight seemeth to be, not so much in doing the hurt, as in making the party repent. But base and crafty cowards, are like the arrow that flieth in the dark. Cosmus, duke of Florence, had a desperate saying against perfidious or neglecting friends, as if those wrongs were unpardonable; You shall read (saith he) that we are commanded to forgive our enemies; but you never read, that we are commanded to forgive our friends. But yet the spirit of Job was in a better tune: Shall we (saith he) take good at God's hands, and not be content to take evil also? And so of friends in a proportion. This is certain, that a man that studieth revenge, keeps his own wounds green, which otherwise would heal, and do well. Public revenges are for the most part fortunate; as that for the death of Caesar; for the death of Pertinax; for the death of Henry the Third of France; and many more. But in private revenges, it is not so. Nay rather, vindictive persons live the life of witches; who, as they are mischievous, so end they infortunate.

Angel 天使
Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
One day the child asked God: "They tell me you are going to send me to earth tomorrow but
how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"
God replied: "Among the many angels, I have chosen one for you. She will be waiting for
you and will take care of you."
"But, " said the child: "tell me here in Heaven I don‘t anything else but sing and smile.
That‘s what I need to be happy!"
God said: "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will
feel your angel‘s love and be happy."
"And," said the child: "how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, If
I don‘t know the language that men talk?"
"That‘s easy", said God: "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words
you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."
The child looked up at God saying: "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
God smiled at the child saying: "Your angel will Place your hands together and will
  teach you how to pray."
The child said: "I‘ve heard on earth there are bad men. Who will Protect me?"
God put his arm around the child, saying: "Your angel will defend you - even if it means
  risking life!"
The child looked sad, saying: "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."
God hugged the child: "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you
the way to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be
  heard.
The child, in a hurry, asked softly: "Oh God, if I am about to leave now Please tell my
   Angel’s name!"
God replied: "Your angel‘s name is of no importance...you will simply call her MOMMY!"

下面引用由boydreaming2003/01/07 09:14am 发表的内容:
Too longer.
FOREIGN BRAIN ~~~~~~
...

Why don’t you just call it “CRACKING BRAIN” or “MIND CRACKER” then, as BRAIN itself doesn’t carry the meaning of “cracking 打破”.
Despite of some offensive meanings (go find out for yourself if you are interested), “CRACKER” means:
1. A thin crisp wafer or biscuit, usually made of unsweetened dough.
2. One that cracks, especially:
a. A firecracker.
b. A small cardboard cylinder covered with decorative paper that holds candy or a party favor and pops when a paper strip is pulled at one or both ends and torn.
c. The apparatus used in the cracking of petroleum.

In other words: Yummies! Explosive! Sparks!
How’’s that? :em02:

The life I desired

That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of lifeof life it offers has a homely grace. It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering smoohtly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vasty sea;but the sea is so calm,so silent,so infifferent, that you are troubled suddently by a vague uneasiness.Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature, strong in me even in those days, that i felt in such an existence, the share of the great majority, something amiss.I recognized its social value.I saw its ordered happiness, but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course. There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights. In my heart was desire to live more dangerously.I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous, shoals it I could only have change-change and the exicitement of unforeseen.

The 英文版三字经 listed on the starting post above is the joke-version.

For the real 1910 version (translated by Herbert Giles), go to my web page:

http://users.openface.ca/~dstephen/trimetric.htm You will also find a link to a recent (about 3 years old) version as translated by a professor at Depauw university.

Please note: All existing versions found on Chinese BBSes originated from my Web page. How do I know that? Here is the story.

On day in 1969 ( plus or minus one year) I was rummaging through the stack at the University of Massachusetts when I came across a thin, worn out booklet with the title "The Trimetric Classic." To my surprise, it was a translation of the 三字经. In those days, photocopying was very expensive--25 cents U.S. a page. How much was 25 cents worth? A big mac was 35 cents. (given or take 10 cents). As a poor graduate student, I couldn't afford having all the pages photocopied, so I transcripted the whole translation down by hand. Needless to say, I made many mistakes in the process.

Years later, at the urging of some people at the Han Ying Bilingual forum, I put that up as a Web page so interested parties can view it freely. As you might have imagined more mistakes were introduced when I typed the darn thing in. Some clean-up have been done recently (1), but in the intervening years, people who copied the page, put it on their own BBSes without mentioning it as a reprint, or who the translator was, have inadvertantly copied the mistakes along with it. That's how I figured all those copies out there can be traced back to the same source. I don't mind people reprinting, but I do mind when some of them put it up as a [原创]. Others are not as audacious, they just would not mention it as a [转帖]. But when queried by their readers as to whether they were the translator, they kept mum about it; thus giving the impression they were the authors.

(1) A few months ago, someone from Norway sent me a list of my typos, and a version done in Unicode instead of GB. I have since posted that up on a separate page.
