In the American HBV forum, someone asked:
Let's say we have the following case:
hep b chronic since birth, hbeag positive.
the patient lives healthy, eat well, sleep well, exercise regularly
what is the life expectancy with medications ? 10 years ?
what is the life expectancy without medications ? 20 years ? of course, you'll always live longer on medication, right ?
what are the minimums ?
Are there any statistics about life expectancy ?
Maybe questions that cannot be answered because the virus isunpredictable ?
If your lucky you'll live long , if not then ........ :-(
Just wanted to know so that one can make better planning for the future.
This virus makes life really more complex.
This is the reply from a very wise and experienced reader.
THis is a question that keeps coming around. And there are no clear or tidy answers.
HBV has been around for a very long time. As it appears that the most "effective" route of transmission is mother to child thisprovides an "opportunity" to see several generations at the same time all living peacefully and happily with HBV.
And there are many more who live totally unknowingly!!!
There are several members on this list whose parents and grandparents are chronically infected with HBV. They are alive and well, and often unmedicated!!
Medications have not been around for very long. There are no long term studies to show what they can and cannot do.
We make many assumptions based on small studies that may last a couple/few years. This does not equate with lifetime.
It may in fact be true that some day, some where a pill will provide the solution and/or prevent other problems that are associated with HBV FOR SOME PEOPLE!
Not everyone is at increased risk for any of the unpleasant issues.
However, we do not know who has the "good gene or virus or attitude"etc.
What we do know though is that stress is not a good thing. It reduces quality of life, and often quantity.
Predicting the number of healthy years you may have is, IMHO, a waste of your energy and can make you miserable.
Live your life fully. Don't predict problems in 10 years. None of us know what today or tomorrow may bring. And HBV in our current world is probably the least ofanyone's problems.
So Live today, plan for tomorrow and have fun!!!! ciao
Ciao
