Two injections of Dynavax's investigational Hepislav hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine protected adults over age 40 as well as the standard regimen consisting of 3 doses of the Engerix-B vaccine given over 6 months, researchers reported at the 51st Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC 2011) last month in Chicago.

Vaccination has dramatically reduced the incidence of hepatitis B in recent years. The HBV vaccine is now included as part of the regular infant immunization schedule in the U.S. and many other countries, with "catch up" vaccination for teens not immunized as children. But still, many older adults have not been vaccinated -- or have not completed their vaccine series -- and therefore remain susceptible to infection. A vaccine that requires 2 rather than 3 doses would be more convenient and might encourage more people to complete the process.
