'I Haven't Smiled Like That The Whole Time I've Been Here'
April 26, 2002
By John Sharify
SEATTLE - He's like the man in the ice cream truck -- you can't wait for him to show up. And when you hear him coming, you know you're in for a big treat.
"We have hungry babies here," said Marv Williams as he rolled his milk cart down the halls of Children's Hospital in Seattle.
He's Marv Williams, but everyone at Children's Hospital knows him as Marv the Milkman, the man who also delivers joy.
When you're sludging around these halls, it's nice to see a friendly face that brightens your day, " said Wendy Richards, mother of Cole, who just received a liver transplant.
Down the hall, 14-year-old Kaitlin Spahn has been down in the dumps. Earlier in the week, she had two tumors removed from her spinal cord. But when Marvin the Milkman stopped in to say hello, her spirit changed.
"I smiled. A big smile," Kaitlin said. "I haven't smiled like that the whole time I've been here."
Marv makes patients smile. He says that's what's in his job description.
"It's really a blessing doing this kind of work," said Marv.
Marv the Milkman has taken an ordinary job, and made it extraordinary. Marv says, he wouldn't have it any other way.
