Researchers produce anti-carcinogenic protein

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani researchers have successfully
produced an antiviral and anti-cancerous recombinant protein Human
Interferon Alpha2B, the state-run APP news agency reported on Wednesday.
A research team in the prestigious University of Punjab, have adopted
the cloning technique to develop the recombinant protein, generally used to
treat critical illnesses like hepatitis, said the APP report.
The development of the protein would cut down the cost of hepatitis
treatment in Pakistan, which has so far been very difficult for lower income
people in the country, said Nasir Mahmood, a key member of the team.
Being sure that this is the first time Pakistani researchers have
produced anti-cancerous protein locally, the research team leader Professor
Dr. Naeem Rashid said they wanted the product to be commercialized to
benefit local patients of hepatitis by offering the antidote at affordable
price, according to the report.
