Yeats, young and old

Willima Butler Yeats, Irish poet, has been considered to be the greatest poet of our time.

Yeats' career stretched across the whole modern period. His poems reflect the varying developments of his age and at the same time maintian a distinctive individual accent. A man very much aware of his Irish origin, he was especially interested in Celtic mysticism and was an active promoter of Irish Literary rebirth. He first establish in London the Irish Literary Society and then helped found Irish Literary Theatre in Dublin in 1899. Political problems in Ireland also concerned him and the Easter 1916 rebellion left a strong impression on him. This can be seen in many of his poems.

Yeats was one of the most original poets of our time. He was among the first poets in English to make deliberate use of symbolism, which he brought in different ways into his poetry.

There are three basic themes in this poetry. The first is to be in the midst of things; the second is to rise above the Mêléé, to contemplate; the third is to seek goodness alone, to become as bodiless as possible on earth and in heaven.

Some important titles of his books of poetry are: The wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems (1889), Responsibilities (1914), The Tower (1928), The Winding Stair and Last Poems (1940).

叶芝出身于新教家庭,父亲是肖像画家。他本人也曾在都柏林艺术学校学画。1885年他开始出版诗作。1887年他在伦敦认识了唯美主义者王尔德Oscar Wilde和莫里斯William Morris等,并着手编辑威廉·布莱克William Blake的诗集,很受到布莱克的影响。1894年他去巴黎,接触到当时的法国诗派。他的朋友英国诗人兼批评家亚瑟·赛门斯Arthur Symons帮助他了解象征派诗。唯美主义和象征主义对叶芝早年的诗很有影响。

他早年曾参加爱尔兰的独立运动,但后来脱离了政治运动,专心致志于文学工作,以为这是唤走爱尔兰民族意识,求得民族独立的途径。他于1896年认识爱尔兰戏剧家格里高利夫人Lady Augusta Gregory,于1904年和她一起在都柏林创立了“亚培戏院”The Abbey Theatre,叶芝亲自管理,并创造了许多剧本。

1889年1月30日,二十三岁的叶芝第一次遇见了美丽的女演员茅德.冈,她时年二十二岁,是一位驻爱尔兰英军上校的女儿,不久前在她的父亲去世后继承了一大笔遗产。茅德.冈不仅美貌非凡,苗条动人,而且,她在感受到爱尔兰人民受到英裔欺压的悲惨状况之后,开始同情爱尔兰人民,毅然放弃了都柏林上流社会的社交生活而投身到争取爱尔兰民族独立的运动中来,并且成为领导人之一。这在叶芝的心目中对于茅德.冈平添了一轮特殊的光晕。
  叶芝对于茅德.冈一见钟情,而且一往情深,叶芝这样描写过他第一次见到茅德.冈的情形:“她伫立窗畔,身旁盛开着一大团苹果花;她光彩夺目,仿佛自身就是洒满了阳光的花瓣。”叶芝深深的爱恋着她,但又因为她在他的心目中形成的高贵形象而感到无望,年轻的叶芝觉得自己“不成熟和缺乏成就”,所以,尽管恋情煎熬着他,但他尚未都她进行表白,一则是因为羞怯,一则是因为觉得她不可能嫁给一个穷学生为妻。
  茅德.冈一直对叶芝若即若离,1891年7月,叶芝误解了她在给自己的一封信的信息,以为她对自己做了爱情的暗示,立即兴冲冲的跑去第一次向茅德.冈求婚。她拒绝了,说她不能和他结婚,但希望和叶芝保持友谊。此后茅德.冈始终拒绝了叶芝的追求。她在1903年嫁给了爱尔兰军官麦克布莱德少校,这场婚姻后来颇有波折,甚至出现了灾,可她十分的固执,即使在婚事完全失意时,依然拒绝了叶芝的追求。尽管如此,叶芝对于她的爱慕终身不渝,因此,难以排解的痛苦充满了叶芝一生的很长一段时间。
叶芝对于茅德.冈爱情无望的痛苦和不幸,促使叶芝写下很多针对于茅德.冈的诗歌来,在数十年的时光里,从各种各样的角度,茅德.冈不断激发叶芝的创作灵感;有时是激情的爱恋,有时是绝望的怨恨,更多的时候是爱和恨之间复杂的张力。
 《当你老了》、《他希望得到天堂中的锦绣》、《白鸟》、《和解》、《反对无价值的称赞》……都是叶芝为茅德.冈写下的名篇。

Yeats初期的诗作是写得绝美的:朦胧,甜美而略带忧郁,充满了美丽的词藻,但他很快就学会写得实在、硬朗,而同时仍然保留了许多美丽的东西。他的诗歌语言既明白如话,又比一般白话更高一层,做到了透亮而又深刻。就像《一件外衣》那样不过八行的小诗,也是在优美的比喻之后来了清醒的现实感,最后归纳成为既有形象又有哲理的两行:

For there's more enterprise
In walking naked.
赤身走路,
更有胆略。

When You Are Old
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look,
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

但是Yeats最好的作品却是完全不用神话而写实际的一类,例如:
