What’’s in a Name？ 谈谈大家的英文名字/洋名 When I first worked part time in a factory, my colleagues insisted that my Chinese name is just too hard to remember and they should give me an English name. There comes Jasmine. When I studied in U, my housemates think that it is fashionable to call me by my English name, so they called me Jasmine too. When I’m actively involved in Internet-based activities, I believe it is good to use a nickname. So I introduce myself as Jasmine. When I first join a Chinese BBS, I guess a Chinese nickname would be more convenient than a English one, therefore I derived "素馨" from Jasmine. Besides that, all my family members, relatives, working partners and close friends call me by my Chinese name. Jasmine is not even printed on my business card. I take name as a symbol to represent oneself in a community. Depends on the nature of the community, the people which the community is made up with, sometimes an English name make you blend into the community much quicker as it is easier to remember. From the responses that I get from this post, I think an English name does no good at all in 智星. I guess... To 天罪: Many meaningful Chinese names are used to name pets as well. I had a dog named 进财, and you can’t be sure that there isn’t a cat somewhere in the world which is called 天罪.(No offence? I’’m just trying to make a statement here.) ----------------------------------------------
