Hi,

We live in China and hepatitis B is very common here. Since our family have not got the vaccinations before coming here, recently we decided to have the blood tested. In case of one of us we received the following results of the test:

HBsAg - negative
anti-HBs - positive
HBeAg - negative
anti-Hbe - positive
anti-HBc - negative

We do not really understand what it means. The local doctor said there is nothing to worry about and more rest is required. However we are not sure about it.

Could you kindly explain the situation for us.

Dear Jarek:

I am always interested in getting questions about hepatitis B. It is not nearly as big a problem in the US as in China. I tend to agree with your local physician.

If some one is hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) positive and hepatitis E antibody positive (anti-Hbe) and hepatitis B surface antigen negative (HBsAg), this means that they have been exposed to the hepatitis B virus in the past and eliminated it on their own. This person does not have to be vaccinated and cannot pass the virus to some one else because they are not infected.

同意！

但是要补充一点，乙肝两对半2、4阳性的人，绝大部分是既往感染过HBV,病毒已经被身体的免疫系统清除，但是有部分人可能是感染了S基因区变异的病毒，建议最好做HBV-DNA检查！
