lol...don't put me on the spot as I can't handle the pressure... .
懷中
1. to get(one's)feet back on the ground:意思是重新振作起來或感到舒服些,通常指財政或健康方面 (to improve one's situation, or to return to one's specific area in life; to feel better) 例如:
Social welfare reform has tried to get some people's feet back on the ground.
I tried to help him get his feet back on the ground concerning his financial problem.
He has gotten his feet back on the ground after his surgery.
Due to his bankruptcy, he attempted to get his feet back on the ground.
Since he has been out of job for months, he is helped to get his feet back on the ground. (he is helped……
但是 to keep (或 have ) one's feet on the ground 意思又是注意實際或腳踏實地 (to be realistic or practical) 例如:
Considering life, young people should keep their feet on the ground.(年輕人對生活應該注重實際,腳踏實地。)
2. to wear two hats:意思是身兼雙職或同時擔任兩個工作 (to have two areas of responsibilities or to work in two areas) 例如:
He wears two hats as a business owner and as President of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Wang wore two hats as chief of marketing and assistant head of sales.
She works two jobs as she wears two hats.
但是 to hold on to (one's) hat(s) 照字面意思又是:「抓緊帽子」。例如:
Hold on to your hat;we are going to the roller coaster.
We are now in Chicago, so we should hold on to our hats.
3. to break a leg:意思是祝你好運,大獲成功。(to wish someone good luck and do a good job)(多半是對演員等的祝願語) 例如:
When she had a piano recital, I told her “to break a leg.”
His parents told him “to break a leg” while he gets on the stage.
“Break a leg”, he said to me.
He broke his leg last week.
4. to win over (one's) heart:是指對方未必喜歡你,而你想用說服力去贏得對方的愛(to try to convince or court someone for romance) (court = date) 例如:
She is so icy;it is hard for him to win over her heart.(她是這麼冷冰冰的,他要贏得她的心可不容易。)
During his math class ,the boy tried to win over his classmate's heart.(上數學課時,這男孩想獲得同學的歡心。)
His girlfriend has won his heart.
Through all these years he has won her heart.
He is confident that he will win her heart.
5. to take a nose dive:意思是不如意的事情發生或急劇下降 (something goes wrong or sharply decline ) 例如:
The stock marketing is taking a nose dive today.
The airplane was taking a nose dive before it crashed.
His grades have taken a nose dive during this semester.
Due to (a) keen competition, his business took a nose dive.
但是「to take a dive」照字面上意思,也是「跳水」 例如:
He took a dive into the (swimming)pool.
(注意:「to take a nose dive」才是真正的俚語)
6. to shoot(oneself)in the foot:意思是自己犯錯(you are making a mistake yourself)例如:
When Mr. Chen made that comment, he shot himself in the foot.
During the job interview, try not to shoot yourself in the foot.
7. to call it a night:多半是指晚上某種聚會結束了,大家可以回家 (end of the evening, so everybody can go home)。
After the host called it a night, then we all went home.
I don't want to spoil the party, but I am going to call it a night.
I am very tired; let's call it a night and go to bed.
