Hepatic encephalopathy is brain dysfunction caused by liver insufficiency and/or porto-systemic shunting due the build up of a variety of toxins including ammonia and exacerbated by inflammation. It manifests as a wide spectrum of neurological/psychiatric abnormalities ranging from subclinical alterations to coma.
