Xu Lihuan was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in jail

A female teacher of an autistic children centre in Panyu, Guangzhou has been sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in jail after a CCTV video clip of her repeatedly tossing a child to the ground went viral.

CCTV footage showing Xu Lihuan, a 30-year-old teacher in Qianhui Children's Rehabilitation Services Centre in Panyu, Guangzhou, throwing a 4-year-old autistic girl to the floor. The girl, Qiu Yaoyao, allegedly fell into a coma following Xu's attack. Outraged netizens have caused the footage to go viral on Chinese social media.

Yaoyao and Xu were doing some exercises together when the child refused to stand properly on a chair. Xu grabs her arms and throws her to the ground, before proceeding to kick her, turn her upside down and bang her head into the floor.

It was only at this point that the teacher finally realized that something was wrong with Yaoyao, and called for assistance from his colleagues. The girl's parents were also informed.

"At about 11:30am on July 2, we received a phone call from the kindergarten. We were told that our daughter had an accident in kindergarten, from which she sustained injury and had to undergo surgery. They asked for our signatures," said Mr Qiu, "This was when we were first informed about the case."

Mr Qiu arrived at the hospital immediately, only to find his daughter lying motionless in bed. He was told that his daughter was in critical condition and had only a slim chance of survival due to the severity of the injury. Doctors reportedly warned Mr Qiu that whilst surgery was the best treatment, Yaoyao's survival couldn't be guaranteed.

As Yaoyao was unconscious Mr Qiu questioned the few kindergarten teachers who were present at the hospital, all of whom told him his daughter sustained her injuries due to a fall.

After examining his daughter however, Mr Qiu was not convinced by the teacher's account. He decided to go to the kindergarten personally and investigate the matter.

Mr Qiu's suspicions were confirmed when he saw the rubber padding which covered the floor of the kindergarten classrooms, making serious injuries from a fall even less likely. After demanding to see the CCTV footage from that day, Mr Qiu called the police, who found evidence of intentional assault and referred the case to the Panyu District public prosecutor.
